Bipolar disorder is a psychiatric illness that is commonly regarded as a spectrum of disorders characterized by fluctuating periods of depression and episodes of elevated mood and flights of fantasy (often referred to as mania). While there are drugs approved to treat both the manic and the depressive phases of this illness, there are still a significant number of people for which the response is less than optimal. As such, there is a significant unmet need.
To this end, SPRI has been recruited by a well-known pharmaceutical company to assist them in the conduct of a clinical trial designed to evaluate the potential effectiveness of a drug to specifically treat the depression associated with the subclass of bipolar disorders known as Bipolar I Depression. The drug under evaluation has already been approved by the FDA to treat other psychiatric indications.
